Approximately 2.1 million ducks and geese migrate to the Texas Coast each fall and winter. They are attracted to the coastal marshes, inland freshwater wetlands, and harvested rice fields where they feed to acquire nutrients and build up energy reserves. Current data on waterfowl energy demands and food supply produced by available foraging habitat indicate a potential food shortage for much of the Gulf Coast. Wetlands improve the overall health of our environment by recharging and purifying groundwater, moderating floods, reducing soil erosion, and providing recreation. During flood events, the wetlands lower flood risk by providing an efficient path to convey water through the Dallas Floodway System. The most productive and desired vegetation communities in wetlands respond positively following a disturbance. Soil disturbance, such as disking, is the most important management action to promote the growth of desired plants that produce food for waterfowl.
Many assistance programs are available for private landowners who are interested in developing and managing wetland habitats on their property. Depending on eligibility, some programs offer cost-share assistance to build and manage wetlands. The Texas Prairie Wetlands Project (TPWP) is a successful cost-share assistance program that develops wetland habitat on private land along the Texas Coast. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department offers technical guidance from local biologists to landowners interested in managing wetland habitat on their property.
